Famous Tourist Island in the World Threatened with Disappearance

The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Abdullah Shahid, warned of the dangers of climate change, stating that the responsibility "falls on us to work to avoid the effects of climate disaster." During the first meeting of the General Assembly in the new year 2022, held yesterday, he noted that his country, the Maldives, is one of the low-lying small island developing states facing the imminent threat of extinction during this century if sea levels continue to rise. Shahid spoke about Tonga, saying that the volcanic eruption and the subsequent tsunami on January 15 serve as an example of the destruction that "small island developing states often face." Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, Shahid mentioned that the communities most affected by the pandemic often live in the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, and small island developing states, which include the Maldives. He called for the establishment of economic strategies that align with global environmental priorities and the conservation of natural resources, noting the upcoming high-level event on sustainable recovery from COVID-19 through tourism, scheduled for May.
