Bathing has numerous benefits, both for physical and mental health. However, a certain way of bathing may be harmful to your brain and heart health. There are various bathing methods, each providing unique health benefits. Research increasingly points to the advantages of cold water bathing, for instance. Most people opt for hot steam baths, which typically involves letting hot water run, consequently generating dense steam that fills the bathroom.
Steam offers a range of health benefits, such as enhancing circulation and relieving stress. However, there are hidden health risks. Abbas Kanani, a pharmacist at Chemist Click, explained to the British newspaper Express that "the steam produced from bathing may make you feel dizzy and lightheaded because the body's response to high temperatures is to redirect blood to the skin's surface to cool down."
Mr. Kanani explained how steam can lead to a reduction in blood pressure. "During this process, the arteries expand and become larger than usual, resulting in blood flowing with less pressure." He added that aside from dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea can also indicate low blood pressure. While this may seem benign, prolonged low blood pressure can have severe consequences.
According to the Mayo Clinic, "a sudden drop in blood pressure can deprive your body of enough oxygen to perform its functions, leading to damage to the heart and brain." There is increasing evidence supporting the benefits of cold water bathing, and a previous study showed that switching to cold water bathing instead of hot reduced the number of sick days and absences among participating employees.
