Spanish Government Moves to Postpone Barcelona Club Election

The Spanish government is heading towards postponing the elections for the Barcelona football club, where three candidates are competing to replace former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned from his position at the end of October last year.

Catalonia radio reported that the Spanish government decided not to hold the elections on January 24 as planned, with a preliminary date set for March. The report confirmed that the Catalan government tends to delay the elections due to a lack of social justice, as most members would be unable to vote because of the COVID-19 crisis.

Former president of the Catalan club, Josep Maria Bartomeu, resigned from his position in late October under significant pressure from the club's fans due to the team's declining results and a dispute with Argentine star Lionel Messi.

The election commission of the Barcelona club announced the names of the three candidates who will compete for the presidency. The election commission revealed that Joan Laporta received 10,272 signatures, of which 9,625 were valid. Victor Font received 4,713 signatures, with 4,431 valid, and finally, Toni Freixa collected 2,822 signatures, with 2,634 valid.

It is worth mentioning that FC Barcelona qualified for the final of the Spanish Super Cup after beating Real Sociedad in a penalty shootout 3-2, following a 1-1 draw at the end of regular and extra time. They will face Athletic Bilbao in the final on Sunday.
