British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his official resignation from the leadership of the Conservative Party on Thursday, stating that he will continue to fulfill his duties as Prime Minister "until a new leader is chosen." Johnson made the statement from outside his residence at 10 Downing Street, saying, "I have fought hard in recent days to stay on, because I felt it was my job and duty to continue as Prime Minister." He announced that he had appointed a new government "while I continue to carry out my responsibilities as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen."
He added, "I am proud of the government's achievements, starting with Brexit and establishing relationships on the European continent, and the laws that have been passed in Parliament, in addition to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccinations, and exiting the lockdown, as well as our actions regarding the war in Ukraine. We will continue to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom," noting that "we have pushed a large investment and rebuilding program, the largest of its kind, which was made possible by the enthusiasm and activity of the British community, and we must continue this work to move forward with these projects."
Johnson emphasized that "it is difficult to change the government at a time when we have achieved successes... Yes, we have been slow on some issues, and the economic situation is very challenging, both locally and internationally. I regret not being present in discussions to witness the opinions and new projects that will be implemented. A new leader will come and move the country forward in these difficult and complex circumstances," affirming that "whatever the new Prime Minister may be, I will offer him my full support." He concluded: "From now until the appointment of a new leader, the government will continue its work, and I will continue to serve this country."
