American Meeting with Burhan in Khartoum... The Goal is to Reinstate Hamdok

International and regional mediations continue to resolve the crisis in Sudan and return the country to a transitional democratic path. The U.S. State Department announced in a statement that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Molly Fee, arrived in Sudan on Monday with the aim of pushing towards a resolution of the crisis. The statement, according to the Associated Press, indicated that Molly would urge various leaders in the country during her meetings on Tuesday to release government officials and politicians who have been detained since the armed forces declared several exceptional measures, and to reinstate Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok and his government, which army commander Abdel Fattah Burhan announced last month was dissolved.

Mediations with Burhan and Freedom and Change

Sources told "Al Arabiya/Al Hadath" that the U.S. envoy would hold meetings today with Burhan and First Lieutenant Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, known as "Hemedti," in addition to leaders of the Freedom and Change coalition. It is also expected that the issue of protecting peaceful demonstrators will be raised. These American meetings come in the wake of a massive protest that swept the capital on Saturday, denouncing the army's measures, which led to the deaths of several protesters, according to the Committee of Doctors in the country. The committee confirmed yesterday that the number of fatalities has risen to seven, all of whom died from gunfire except for one, including a 13-year-old girl named Rimaz Hatim Al-Ata.

The American initiative coincides with the continued detention of several political leaders and ministers since the dawn of October 25, 2021, while Hamdok remains under house arrest, as reiterated multiple times by the UN envoy in the country. Burhan announced on that day the dissolution of the government and the Sovereignty Council, the suspension of some provisions of the constitutional document, as well as the dissolution of several committees, foremost among them the "Removal of Empowerment" committee, alongside the dismissal of several ambassadors abroad. Since that date, local and international efforts have been launched to resolve the crisis; however, Hamdok has insisted on the condition for the release of the detainees and the return to the situation before October 25 to accept a proposal presented to him by the army through intermediaries for the formation of a new government.
