A man bit a police dog and stabbed it in Northern California while officers were trying to arrest him on Wednesday, according to U.S. authorities. Fairfield Police said the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs. The dog, named "Kurt," was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment and is recovering at home with its trainer.
Officers were initially summoned to the home of an elderly victim on Wednesday afternoon following a report of a burglary, as stated by the police department in a post on Facebook. The department then received a report from an Amazon employee, who said the man threatened to kill him and steal the truck he uses for deliveries.
Officers found the 44-year-old man running inside the first victim’s home. They attempted to get him out of the house but were unsuccessful. When the police and the K-9 dog entered the residence, the dog "engaged" with the man, and authorities did not provide further details on what occurred during this engagement.
The police reported that the man then allegedly bit the dog on the face and stabbed it in the left side with a knife. The man was treated in the hospital for unspecified injuries. It was unclear whether the injuries were related to the dog or the alleged drug use. He was booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of burglary, vehicle theft, harming a police dog, obstructing justice, and resisting an officer. Online jail records indicate that he is also facing a violation of prior parole.
The city of Fairfield is located about 80 kilometers northeast of San Francisco.
