Sudden Visit by Tunisian President in Habib Bourguiba Street

Tunisian President Kais Saied arrived unexpectedly on Sunday at Habib Bourguiba Street in the center of the capital to listen to citizens’ complaints, who welcomed him with supportive slogans and chants. Afterward, he headed to the Ministry of the Interior. The Tunisian president pledged to combat illegal immigration and human trafficking networks operating from Tunisian shores, warning against "political exploitation of the issue during this delicate period the country is going through."

Speaking before security and military leaders, the president assured that efforts would be made to confront human trafficking networks both in Tunisia and in the north, emphasizing that what occurred in 2011 would not be repeated. The president indirectly referred to the mass migrations that followed the revolution and the fall of the late President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's regime in 2011 when 20,000 Tunisian migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa within days.

Additionally, 30 national figures from Tunisia submitted an open letter today to the national and international public, expressing their support for the Tunisian president's response to the people's demands, asserting that his recent decisions should not be regarded as a coup against the constitution or legitimacy. They called for the legal accountability of those who break the law, without any vindictiveness or revenge, and expressed their complete rejection of any settlement with those responsible for corruption.
