In new developments concerning the case that shocked Egypt, the Public Prosecutor has revealed startling surprises in the tragedy of the suicide of "Basant Khaled," a young girl from Kafr El-Zayat, due to the circulation of her photos on the phones of the youth in her town. The Prosecutor's office decided to detain two suspects provisionally for the investigations. One of them is accused of "assaulting the minor,” who is under 18, and "invading her body, threatening her with the dissemination of photographs and a video attributed to her which they obtained stealthily, and publishing it on social media."
Both suspects are also charged with "violating the sanctity of the victim's private life, publicly circulating those photos and the video without her consent, thereby infringing on the principles and family values of Egyptian society." The statement described her as having been "misled."
Additionally, the prosecution is continuing its investigative procedures to uncover all the facts, emphasizing that the girl's death was a result of the psychological pressures inflicted by the two suspects, and that she was misled through the exploitation of her young age, leading her to a state of despair and extreme fear that drove her to suicide. The prosecution warned in a statement against the continued dissemination of false details about the case, noting that it has observed "many individuals' unwarranted curiosity into the nature of the relationship between the deceased and the suspects, evaluating the behavior of her relatives, and circulating circumstances of the incident, some of which are fabricated and some untrue, while some have even discussed the final fate of the deceased."
Currently, security agencies are interrogating several friends of the two suspects and some of the girl’s friends to inquire about the details of the incident. The prosecution has decided to detain the suspects for four days pending the hearing of witness testimonies and reviewing technical reports. It is noteworthy that Basant's story has shaken Egyptian streets and has dominated social media over the past two days.
