Egypt: Famous Dancer Causes Teacher's Suspension

The Education Directorate in Qena Governorate, Egypt, has suspended a teacher from the martyr Kheirat Secondary School in Nagaa Hammadi for two months. The punishment followed the teacher and a group of students watching videos of a famous dancer in Egypt on the interactive board during November 2020, according to Egyptian media. A video circulated on Facebook showing the teacher and two students viewing the dancer's video on the smart board, which angered community members and parents in Nagaa Hammadi as well as other Upper Egyptian governorates.

The 59-year-old teacher in the video stated that he entered the class during a spare lesson and saw two students watching a video on the smart board, which he is not adept at using due to his age. He requested them to turn off the video as it was inappropriate, but they refused. Despite his insistence, they did not comply. He later expressed surprise at the video circulating on social media, suggesting it might have been a scheme plotted against him by some students.
