Media estimates indicate that the Liberals, led by current Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, have won the early parliamentary elections held on Monday. According to projections broadcast by Canadian media, Trudeau's Liberals achieved a result that will ensure the incumbent Prime Minister returns to office for a third consecutive term, as reported by AFP. However, it is still unclear whether the Liberals secured enough seats to form a majority government under Trudeau or if it will be a minority government, due to the close nature of these preliminary results. If Trudeau manages to form a minority government, he will need to gain support from opposition members to pass his government’s agenda in Parliament.
Later, the Canadian elections showed that the Liberals are leading in 154 electoral districts, while the Conservatives came in second, leading in 121 districts, based on initial counting results. It is worth noting that the Canadian House of Commons consists of 338 seats, and the Liberal party needs to win 170 to achieve a majority. Trudeau called for these early elections in mid-August in an effort to regain the majority he lost two years ago. After casting his vote, Trudeau expressed that he was "confident." He told AFP, surrounded by his wife, Sophie Grégoire, and their children as the family exited a polling station in Montreal, "We worked hard during this campaign, and Canadians are making an important choice," according to AFP.
