The American newspaper "Washington Post" reported on Wednesday night, citing a senior official at the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon), that President Joe Biden's administration has greenlit the sending of combat helicopters to Ukraine. The combat helicopters that will be sent from Washington to Kyiv will be capable of being outfitted with air-to-ground missiles to conduct attacks—according to the newspaper—against Russian armored vehicles. Additionally, armored personnel carriers will be sent to the Ukrainian army.
This development comes hours after U.S. officials told Reuters that the Biden administration is expected to announce on Wednesday additional military assistance to Ukraine to counter the Russian assault, valued at $750 million. The assistance will be funded using presidential withdrawal authority, which allows the U.S. president to authorize the transfer of materials and services from U.S. stockpiles without congressional approval in emergency situations.
One official stated that final decisions regarding the assistance to be sent are still under review. The White House had previously stated that it has provided over $1.7 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian offensive on February 24.
