Storing Foods in the Refrigerator Reduces Their Nutritional Value: Here Are the Reasons

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, many people are keen on buying and storing large quantities of food and vegetables to avoid needing to go out daily during fasting hours. This practice provides temporary convenience during the fasting period but negatively impacts overall health. Storing foods and meats for long periods in the refrigerator or freezer diminishes their nutritional value and mineral content, turning them into mere fibers or pieces of meat without any dietary benefits. This has been confirmed by nutrition experts.

Nutritionists recommend consuming fresh foods as much as possible to obtain complete nutritional value.

**Basic Rules**

In this regard, Dr. Ahmed Diab, a clinical nutrition consultant, stated to "Ahram Gate": "The basic rules everyone should adhere to include ensuring that foods are as fresh as possible because storing food for long periods, even in the refrigerator or freezer, is an unhealthy habit that leads to the loss of many nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, as well as proteins in stored meats and poultry. Even when stored in the freezer, they deteriorate and lose their nutritional value, becoming mere pieces of meat devoid of benefits, with amino acids breaking down due to prolonged storage."

**Avoid Long-Term Storage**

He added, "Many vitamins and minerals are lost when foods are stored for long periods, emphasizing the necessity of consuming meals as fresh as possible and not storing them for extended durations to retain their nutritional value."
