A jury composed of experts in the German language announced on Wednesday its selection of the word "Pushback" as the worst word in Germany for 2021. The committee stated in Marburg that this term, derived from English, has been used in the context of illegal expulsions of asylum seekers at border areas. The committee criticized the use of this expression, as it downplays "an inhumane process."
The term "language police" was chosen as the second worst word of 2021, which can tarnish the reputation of individuals who, among other things, advocate for the appropriate, fair, and non-discriminatory use of language. The committee's selections came from numerous suggestions submitted by interested individuals until December 31 of last year. A total of around 1300 messages were received, containing 454 different terms, of which just under 45 met the criteria.
In 2020, the selected terms were "homeward deportation care" and "Corona dictatorship." The announcement of the worst word of the year had traditionally taken place in the German city of Darmstadt for many years. With the change in the jury, the announcement has now moved to the University of Marburg.
