French winger Ousmane Dembélé has rejected a new offer from Barcelona for an extension. According to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," after months of a "cat and mouse" game between Dembélé and the club, and following the effort made by the club to persuade the player to stay, the French winger informed the club of his intention not to renew. Dembélé's current contract with Barcelona expires next summer, meaning he can now sign with any club.
The newspaper stated that Barcelona will immediately withdraw the renewal offer from Dembélé, to prevent the French player from changing his mind. It explained that Barcelona plans to sell Dembélé at a low price in the ongoing winter transfer market. If Dembélé refuses to leave, "Mundo Deportivo" reported that Barcelona intends to bench him, especially after Ansu Fati and Memphis Depay have recovered from injury, in addition to the signing of Ferran Torres and the Moroccan Abdessamad El Zejzouli's refusal to play in the Africa Cup of Nations.
