Automatic washing machines have a large capacity, leading some to believe they can wash large and heavy items, such as blankets and small rugs. However, an expert warns that doing so could damage the machine. According to "Family Handyman," some people attempt to clean their toilet mats by putting them in the washing machine designed for clothes, which is inappropriate, as warned by the expert.
Scott Guy, a technical appliances expert, mentioned that in his 30 years of experience, he has seen many washing machines that broke down because owners placed toilet mats in them. He added that in some cases, he found the washing machine's front broken beyond repair when someone put two toilet mats inside at the same time.
He noted that while automatic washing machines have a substantial space that allows them to accommodate heavy blankets, this can mislead people into thinking they can handle large and heavy items. The issue lies in the fact that mats absorb significant amounts of water, making them heavier than what the machine can handle, according to "Sky News Arabia."
Modern washing machines operate at a higher spin rate than traditional ones, reaching up to 1200 RPM, which generates considerable force. If there are large items inside the washing machine, this could harm and tear the machine. The expert emphasized that cleaning a bathroom mat this way risks damaging the washing machine, especially since it contains a rubber support that may disintegrate during the wash cycle.
