The German army reported on Twitter that a gunfight broke out between Afghan security forces and unknown attackers at the northern gate of Kabul Airport on Monday. The German army stated that one Afghan security personnel was killed, and three others were injured in the battle, which also involved American and German forces. They added that no injuries were reported among German soldiers. Reuters news agency noted that U.S. and German troops at Kabul Airport participated in the ongoing clashes at the airport.
**Threat of ISIS Attacks**
Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden stated that civilians at Kabul Airport face the threat of attacks that could be carried out by ISIS or other groups. In a speech from the White House, Biden mentioned that "terrorists in Afghanistan may exploit the security situation to launch attacks targeting Afghans or foreigners." He considered that "security conditions are changing rapidly in Afghanistan," following the Taliban's takeover of most areas of the country, including the capital, Kabul. Biden noted, "We have evacuated 12,000 people from Kabul Airport since August 14," but emphasized that "evacuation operations from the airport are tough and painful." He stressed that Washington's main goal is to safely extract Americans from Afghanistan, but "we are working to transport our Afghan allies who stood with us from Kabul Airport."
