The English team managed to outshine their French opponent, awaiting the return match scheduled to take place on March 16. Chelsea took the lead in the eighth minute through German player Kai Havertz, followed by American Christian Pulisic scoring the second goal in the 63rd minute.
In another match at Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal hosted Juventus in a game that marked the Spanish club's return to the knockout stages of the Champions League after a long absence. Just 32 seconds into the match, Juventus took the lead with a goal from Serbian forward Dusan Vlahovic, but Daniel Parejo equalized for Villarreal in the 66th minute. The two teams will meet again in the return match at Juventus' home ground on March 16.
