Death of Two Soldiers and Injury of Four Others in Northern Iraq Clashes

The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday the death of two soldiers and the injury of four others as a result of clashes with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the Kare region of northern Iraq.

The ministry stated in a statement that the clashes occurred in the operational area of "Claw-Eagle 2," where the Turkish army is conducting a military operation within Iraqi territory. Two soldiers were killed, and four others were injured.

The ministry clarified that the injured were transferred to a hospital, noting that specific targets in the area were bombed in an airstrike, inflicting heavy losses on the PKK, which Ankara designates as a terrorist organization.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense launched the "Claw-Eagle 2" operation on Wednesday against PKK targets in northern Iraq, indicating that "the objective of the operation revolves around retaliating against terrorist attacks and ensuring the security of the country's borders."

It is noteworthy that the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced in mid-June 2020 the launch of the "Claw-Eagle" operation in northern Iraq against the PKK. Meanwhile, the Iraqi government has summoned the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad, Fatih Yıldız, several times to protest the military operations and threatened to file a complaint with the United Nations Security Council. They also deployed Iraqi border guard forces; however, this deployment did not prevent Turkey from continuing its artillery shelling.
