Turkey Launches Operations

Turkey announced today the launch of two military operations involving more than 4,000 soldiers against the PKK organization.

According to a statement from the Turkish Interior Ministry reported by the Anadolu Agency, operations "Eren 4" and "Eren 5" are being conducted with the involvement of 1,620 security personnel and 2,550 security personnel, respectively, against the PKK, without further details. The ministry stated that it continues the "Eren" operations against the "terrorist organization" in an effort to uproot its presence, labeling them as terrorist organizations starting from January 11th.

The statement explained that operation "Eren 4" involves 93 teams from the gendarmerie and police, comprising 1,620 security personnel, while "Eren 5" includes 2,550 security personnel organized into 145 teams. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had previously announced that the country might intervene directly to remove PKK fighters from the Sinjar region in northern Iraq. Erdoğan mentioned in earlier remarks to journalists in Istanbul, "I always say this phrase: We might come unexpectedly one night," referring to the possibility of a surprise Turkish operation to expel the terrorists from Sinjar. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar held discussions with officials in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, focusing on ways to enhance mutual security and military cooperation between the two parties.
