Arrest of a Woman in Sudan Claiming Prophethood: Two Killed and Followers Threaten Detractors

Sudanese police in the Al-Jazeera state, southeast of the capital Khartoum, arrested a woman claiming to be a prophet along with several of her followers who threatened those doubting her alleged prophethood. Media reports indicated that the woman was apprehended in the rural area of "Al-Kambo" in Al-Jazeera state, central Sudan. The Sudanese police stated in a press release that they managed to dismantle a criminal network specializing in deception and sorcery, comprised of 30 men and women led by a woman.

The report mentioned that a complaint was received about a woman who claimed to have seen the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a dream, a story that was believed by several neighboring residents and her family. Later, the woman claimed to be a prophet. Additionally, she was said to have whipped her victims in an attempt to heal them, resulting in the deaths of two individuals—a woman and a child—due to their injuries. In the past, Sudan has witnessed individuals claiming prophethood and promoting these claims through social media, usually ending with their pursuit and punishment by the Sudanese police.
