As negotiations in Vienna are expected to resume today, Tuesday, the U.S. envoy to Iran announced they are on their way to Vienna for a fifth round regarding the nuclear agreement. Robert Malley tweeted early this morning, "We hope for mutual return to compliance with the nuclear deal." He added, "The last round of talks was constructive and saw tangible progress, but there is still much work to be done."
Senior diplomats from Britain, France, and Germany confirmed last week that there has been significant progress in the nuclear discussions, but success is not guaranteed, as there are still very difficult unresolved issues. Meanwhile, Al Arabiya/Al Hadath's correspondent noted that the United States requested guarantees to move forward with the negotiations.
Iranian Commitment
For his part, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reaffirmed his country's commitment to continuing negotiations until reaching a final agreement. In statements on Sunday, he said that his country's delegation in the Austrian capital would continue negotiating until reaching a deal that revives the 2015 nuclear agreement and brings the United States back into it.
He also pointed out that the United States has explicitly stated its readiness to lift sanctions upon reaching an agreement between the Western delegations (Germany, Britain, France, China, Russia) and Iran, which have been meeting in the Austrian capital since early last month (April).
It is noteworthy that the fourth and longest round of talks resumed on May 7 with the remaining parties in the agreement: Iran, Russia, China, France, Britain, and Germany, and it lasted for more than 10 days. However, it did not achieve significant breakthroughs, according to multiple European diplomatic sources.
