Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi inaugurated the Handball World Championship during a festival held at Cairo Stadium this Wednesday evening.
In his speech, President el-Sisi announced the opening of the tournament, stating that hosting this major event sends a message that the world is now capable of coexistence in light of the new situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic. He said, "I am confident that we will overcome this ordeal, God willing. We will be more united and cohesive in facing the greatest challenges and more understanding of peaceful and safe coexistence among peoples." He concluded by saying, "In the name of God and with His blessing, we declare the opening of the 27th Handball World Championship in Egypt."
Egypt will host the Handball World Championship from today until January 31. The area surrounding Cairo Stadium witnessed heightened security measures during the tournament's opening, alongside full implementation of medical and precautionary measures.
The opening match of the World Championship will feature Egypt against Chile at 7 PM Cairo time at Cairo International Stadium.
