Judge Nawaf Salam thanked the MPs who entrusted him today with the presidency of the government, "especially in the extraordinarily difficult circumstances our country is going through." He emphasized that "our concern is unified, which is to save Lebanon from its plight and alleviate the suffering and injustice of our people. This requires a change in our approach to the crisis both in strategy and practice, starting with urgent and serious reform in financial policies."
Salam stated in a statement that the situation "will not stabilize without also initiating political reform, which must primarily address the mentality of clientelism and the culture of quotas that protect corruption, cause waste, and drain the country's resources and human capabilities. At the forefront of this reform is achieving actual independence for the judiciary and fortifying state institutions against the evils of sectarianism and favoritism."
He added that "reform in financial policies remains inadequate if it is not linked to clear policies and measures to stimulate economic growth. Furthermore, none of these reforms would hold meaning if they are not grounded in goals and principles of fairness, social justice, and the safeguarding of public and private rights and freedoms."
He concluded: "I will remain, as I have always been, working alongside all those committed to the cause of change for the reform of the state, asserting its sovereignty over its entire territory, and restoring our country's position and role in the Arab world and the trust of the global community."
