Death of Godoy Cruz's All-Time Top Scorer Santiago García Found Dead

The striker of Godoy Cruz, a team competing in the Argentine football league, and its all-time top scorer, the Uruguayan Santiago García, was found dead in his apartment in Uruguay on Saturday.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) issued a statement via its official Twitter account expressing its condolences for García's loss, stating: "The Argentine Football Association expresses its sorrow for the loss of Santiago García, a player for Godoy Cruz, and conveys its condolences to his family, loved ones, and teammates."

Media reports in Uruguay revealed that Santiago García was being treated in a psychiatric hospital and had been diagnosed with COVID-19 on January 22, placing him in self-isolation. The Argentine newspaper "Diario Olé" mentioned the possibility of the player's suicide, although this has not been confirmed officially.

It is noteworthy that Santiago García, 30 years old, played for several clubs including Nacional, River Plate, and Atlético Paranaense, before joining Godoy Cruz in 2016. He topped the team’s scoring list in the league for the 2017-2018 season and became Godoy Cruz's all-time leading scorer with 51 goals.
