Why Do We Taste Blood While Running?

A doctor explained in a TikTok video why some people taste blood while jogging. The doctor, using the account name @lifeofadoctor, shared a clip of a young girl running and stated that she could taste blood in her mouth, explaining what happens in her body during that time.

The doctor commented on the video, "Some minds will be blown by this, but if you're running at any time and start to taste blood, it's actually because you're bleeding from your lungs."

He clarified, "When you begin exercising, your blood pressure rises, and there are these tiny sacs deep in your lungs where blood passes through to get oxygen. When blood pressure rises, some of them burst, releasing blood into your lungs. During exhalation, this blood gets absorbed from the trachea into your mouth, and from there, your taste buds pick it up."

The doctor's clip quickly went viral, shocking many viewers who wanted to learn more. One wrote, "Okay, but I think you forgot the part where you tell us if we should be worried or not," while another added, "You left out the part where you tell me if this is going to kill me, doctor."

The doctor later clarified that any blood one might taste is a "small amount" and there's no need to worry. He commented, "Just to clarify, it's a very small amount, so this is not an excuse to stop exercising... don’t use me as an excuse."
