A new leak has revealed that the upcoming update for the Pixel 6 will include a face recognition feature for unlocking the phone. For most users of the Google Pixel 6 series, using the under-display fingerprint scanner has been a frustrating experience. Google has improved the scanner through software updates, with expectations that the company will continue to enhance this feature.
Since November, reports have indicated that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will activate the face unlock feature. The Face Unlock feature was introduced with the Pixel 4 line. Similar to Apple's Face ID, Face Unlock on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL utilizes 3D maps to provide secure face recognition for user identification, allowing users to unlock their phones, access certain apps, and complete transactions using mobile payment platforms.
There has been speculation that Google would include this feature in a future Pixel Quarterly Feature drop, with early speculation suggesting it would be added only to the Pixel 6 Pro. Although the face recognition system can be activated through a software update, it will not include 3D maps (as the necessary components are not included in the Pixel 6 models). Some have suggested that Google may require users to perform an action, such as moving their heads, to prove that the image in front of the selfie camera is not a static picture, according to Phone Arena.
