Key Health Decisions to Make in 2022

Maintaining our health and well-being has become an urgent need, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, as the New Year approaches, it is essential to take all necessary measures to ensure good health. Nutrition and fitness specialist Veronica Komra shared a list of health decisions to make in the new year during an interview with the Times of India, as follows:

1. **Eat More Whole Foods**

Nutrition experts recommend consuming more whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and sources of lean protein, while reducing processed foods like bread, cheese, processed meats, and ready-made frozen meals.

2. **Choose a Sustainable Diet**

Following a diet that offers quick results but harms metabolism and mental health is unhealthy. Hence, it is necessary to choose a sustainable diet that maintains your health and weight. Select a nutrition plan that not only meets your goals but also fits well with your lifestyle.

3. **Increase Vitamin D Intake**

Optimal vitamin D intake is essential not only for bone and immune health but can also help prevent chronic health issues (such as heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer) and even stimulate hair growth. Thus, make sure to expose yourself to sunlight for at least 15-20 minutes daily and consider adding a vitamin D supplement to your daily vitamin inventory.

4. **Incorporate Movement into Your Daily Routine**

Whether it’s exercising, playing a sport, or simply going for a walk, it is important to stimulate blood flow and oxygen supply to every part of the body for optimal functioning. Ensure to incorporate enjoyable forms of physical activity into your daily tasks.

5. **Prioritize Sleep**

With the excessive use of social media we see today, many people deprive themselves of sleep and overconsume caffeine, leading to anxiety and weakened immune responses. Lack of sleep and poor sleep quality can cause severe health issues such as insulin resistance, neurological problems, weight gain, depression, and anxiety. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure we get 7-8 hours of quality sleep each day for our bodies to function optimally.

6. **Reduce Stress**

Stress is often overlooked, being a key factor contributing to almost all health problems ranging from heart disease, obesity, diabetes, digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux, to depression. Experts recommend practicing meditation, yoga, and deep breathing, while avoiding anything that triggers our stress.
