Fruits as a Healthy Alternative to Chocolate

Fruits serve as a healthy alternative to chocolate when craving sweets, as they contain less sugar and fewer calories on one hand, and are a treasure trove of minerals and vitamins on the other hand. Among the most notable fruits are strawberries.

German clinical nutritionist Matthias Riedel explains that strawberries contain more vitamin C than lemons and oranges, and they are rich in folic acid, vitamin B1, and vitamin K. Additionally, they are abundant in minerals such as zinc, copper, and manganese. Strawberries are also characterized by being low in sugar and calories, with 100 grams containing about 32 calories. Moreover, strawberries are rich in phytochemicals, which have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, as well as protective properties against cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer.

Regarding blueberries, German nutritionist Susanna Umbach points out that they are rich in vitamin E and manganese, and they have a high content of anthocyanins, which protect cells and combat stress. Blueberries are also rich in vitamin C and selenium, which is important for the health and beauty of hair and nails.

Watermelon and cantaloupe are low-calorie fruits as well, with 100 grams of watermelon containing 37 calories, while 100 grams of cantaloupe have 54 calories. Cantaloupe is high in vitamin C, whereas watermelon is known for its phytochemical content. Both fruits help quench thirst, as water comprises up to 95% of their composition.

Cherries are another mineral-rich fruit, containing iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium.

Moderation is Key

Nutritionist Umbach warns that some fruits should be consumed in moderation, such as grapes and bananas, due to their high sugar content. Excessive intake of fruit sugar (fructose) can cause digestive issues and burden the liver, as the liver converts fructose into fats, increasing the risk of fatty liver disease and diabetes.
