Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. Congress have introduced legislation calling for the removal of far-right Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, from her committee duties in the House of Representatives due to her social media posts.
According to the BBC, Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy appointed Greene to the Education and Labor Committee and the Budget Committee last month to introduce a proposal for the impeachment of the new President Joe Biden. Democrats argue that her statements have disqualified her from serving on congressional committees, particularly the Education Committee.
Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz from Florida, who is leading the group of Democratic lawmakers, stated that limiting the potential future harm she could cause to Congress and removing her from a seat at the table where policies based on facts are formulated is an appropriate punishment and a suitable way to curtail her influence.
Congressman Jimmy Gomez from California leads 61 of his colleagues in seeking legislation to strip Greene of her congressional membership altogether. In turn, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell criticized Greene, labeling her as a “cancer for the Republican Party” due to her beliefs in conspiracy theories.
In a statement to The Hill, McConnell remarked that Greene, by promoting “ridiculous lies” and adhering to conspiracy theories, is a cancer for the Republican Party. Greene, who is 46 years old, was elected last November as a congresswoman from Georgia, believing in the conspiracy theories propagated by the far-right QAnon movement and echoing Trump’s claims that he won the presidential election but was robbed of his victory by the Democrats.
