The Situation is Tense... and "No Formation" Seems More Likely

The Situation is Tense... and

While Lebanon is experiencing a state of chaos that has exhausted its people on all fronts, the conflict between the Free Patriotic Movement and the Future Movement flared up yesterday, reflecting a severe setback in the efforts to form a government.

The crisis is intensifying with no signs of resolution in sight, and with President Aoun's remarks yesterday, the remnants of the dispute were exposed and deepened further, warning that "no formation" is more likely in the coming days. Lebanese media reported on a provocative statement recorded during a meeting between Lebanese President Michel Aoun and caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab. The video shows President Aoun addressing Diab, saying: "There is no formation... He gave me a paper, he is lying, he made false statements, and look how long he has been absent."

In response, Saad Hariri addressed Aoun's statements by referencing the Bible, posting two tweets on Twitter that stated: "For wisdom does not enter a deceitful soul, and does not dwell in a body enslaved to sin. 1/2." In the second tweet, he added: "For the spirit of holy discipline flees from deceit, and withdraws itself from thoughts that are foolish, and is overwhelmed when iniquity comes. 2/2."

Informed sources revealed that Hezbollah's efforts to restore relations between the Free Patriotic Movement and the Future Movement will face more obstacles following yesterday’s statements. Amid all these complexities, the political class in Lebanon is unable to agree on a new government as the country slips toward an extremely difficult financial crisis.
