Qatar Evacuates Over 300 Students and 200 Journalists from Afghanistan in 72 Hours

Her Excellency Mrs. Lolwah Al-Khater, Assistant Foreign Minister, stated that Qatar continues its evacuation operations from Afghanistan. In a tweet this evening, she mentioned that in the past 72 hours, Qatar has evacuated over 300 students and more than 200 journalists from Afghanistan, many of whom are now safe with their families and children in comfortable accommodations in Doha.

Her remarks came in response to a CNN journalist who tweeted, "Soldiers at Kabul airport told me that there are 10,000 people ready for evacuation, but there is nowhere to take them because Qatar refuses to accept more Afghans as they have reached their capacity. It's unfortunate; someone needs to do something."

In turn, James Cleverly, the UK's Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, expressed his gratitude to Qatar for its role in bringing British citizens back to the UK from Kabul. He tweeted that he spoke with Her Excellency Mrs. Lolwah Al-Khater earlier about the situation in Afghanistan and thanked her for Qatar's ongoing mediation role and the assistance they provided in returning UK citizens from Kabul.

Qatari forces participated in the evacuation operations of diplomatic missions, international organizations, and citizens from Afghanistan, as a video showed Qatari forces securing the area around the evacuation process and assisting those stranded at Kabul airport. Earlier today, the U.S. Department of Defense stated that its mission continues to defend the Kabul airport and carry out evacuations from Afghanistan, asserting that Kabul airport is safe and the pace of evacuation flights is steadily increasing, with flights departing from Kabul reaching safe locations like Qatar and others, according to tweets published by Al Jazeera.
