An Australian personal trainer revealed what actually happens to your body when you don't exercise, and the horrifying long-term health effects of living a sedentary lifestyle. Rachel Attard, from Sydney, stated that there are many reasons to engage in physical activities, ranging from reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases to improving mood.
In an interview with the Daily Mail Australia, Rachel outlined a series of serious health risks that may arise from not exercising, as follows:
**Increased Risk of High Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Diseases**
The first negative impact of sitting too much, whether for work, relaxation, or commuting, is an increased risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. People who do not exercise are 30-50% more likely to have high blood pressure compared to those who do. Over time, high blood pressure can damage blood vessels, leading to heart diseases, kidney problems, and strokes.
**Increased Risk of Type 2 Diabetes**
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar (glucose). Exercise helps improve insulin levels and assists the body in controlling blood sugar levels. According to Rachel, lack of exercise leads to the opposite effect and plays a significant role in the development of type 2 diabetes. Some studies indicate that exercise isn't the only contributor; maintaining light activity throughout the day is important too. Therefore, Rachel recommends walking 10,000 steps daily.
**Negative Mood**
While exercise is primarily for physical health benefits, it can work wonders in changing your mood and mental health as well. Rachel confirmed that when exercising, your body produces endorphins which help enhance feelings of happiness and improve pain tolerance. As a result, individuals who exercise or those who have stopped exercising often experience a sudden drop in mood.
**Risk of Obesity**
It is well-known that lack of movement can easily contribute to obesity, and engaging in physical activities helps burn more calories. According to Rachel, activity also increases metabolism, which helps prevent long-term weight gain.
**Risk of Cancer**
Studies indicate that weight gain resulting from a lack of movement is strongly associated with various types of cancer. Therefore, Rachel advises regular exercise and weight loss to avoid the risks of this deadly disease.
