U.S. Justice Department Investigates Possible Attempt by Officials to Support Trump in Overturning Election Results

CNN reported that the Justice Department's internal oversight office will investigate whether any officials within the department attempted to support former President Donald Trump in overturning the presidential election results.

According to the oversight office, which issued a statement confirming that Inspector General Horowitz has launched an investigation to ascertain if any current or former Justice Department officials participated in any improper attempts to have the department seek to change the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The investigation follows reports from both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, indicating that former President Donald Trump attempted to use the Justice Department to contest the election results.

The New York Times reported that sources within the Trump administration revealed that Trump had planned in recent weeks to alter the election results, stating that Trump coordinated with Jeffrey Clark, a Justice Department official, to remove Attorney General Rosen and appoint someone more loyal, with the goal of overturning the presidential election in Georgia.

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate Majority Leader, had previously urged Horowitz to initiate an investigation on this matter, tweeting, "It is outrageous that a leader in the Justice Department under Trump would conspire to undermine the will of the people."
