The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced an unemployed Arab man to six months in prison and ordered his deportation after serving his sentence, following his conviction for robbery and impersonating a police officer. The man stopped two Asian individuals and slapped each of them in the face while claiming to be from the investigations department, instilling fear in them, leading them to comply with his demands.
The first victim, aged 23, reported that he was with his friend in a parking lot of a shopping center in Bur Dubai when the accused approached them, claiming to be an investigator and speaking to them in English, a language the victim did not understand well. The victim added that the accused suddenly slapped his friend, causing him pain, which led the friend to retaliate with a slap in return. This act incited fear in both of them. The accused then demanded to see their identification cards, and as the victim reached for his wallet to provide his ID, the accused forcibly grabbed the wallet and fled.
The victim indicated that the attack had them feeling confused and noted that his wallet contained 1,500 dirhams along with several personal cards. Meanwhile, the Dubai Police were able to identify the accused after conducting the necessary investigations, and he confessed to the charges against him. The victims identified him during a lineup. The Dubai Public Prosecution charged him with impersonating a public servant, robbery, and assault, leading to the Criminal Court convicting him, sentencing him to imprisonment, and imposing a fine equal to the stolen amount.
