Parliament Approves Student Dollar, Election Expenses Coverage, and Extension of Municipal Councils' Terms

The Parliament approved several items in its legislative session today, the most notable being the Student Dollar law and the coverage of parliamentary election expenses. The following items have been approved so far:

- Approval of Decree No. 8663, which includes the law mandating banks operating in Lebanon to disburse an amount of $10,000 at the official exchange rate for Lebanese university students studying abroad before the 2020-2021 academic year.

- Approval of the draft law under Decree No. 8813 to open an exceptional additional credit in the 2022 general budget for the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities – Administrative Departments (General Directorate of Political Affairs and Refugees) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants – Central Administration and Missions Abroad – to cover the expenses of the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 2022.

- Approval of the draft law under Decree No. 8639 to establish a mandatory syndicate for specialists in nutrition and meal organization.

Deputy Ibrahim Kanaan called during the session for the approval of the additional credit as amended by the Finance Committee to fund elections abroad, and to add a provision for funding the issuance of passports domestically and abroad to alleviate the suffering of Lebanese citizens.

- Approval of the draft law under Decree No. 8953 to extend the term of municipal and elective councils until May 31, 2023.

- Approval of the draft law under Decree No. 8722 seeking approval to conclude the basic agreement between the Government of the Lebanese Republic and the World Food Program.

- Approval of the bill allowing the government to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its optional protocol.

- Approval of the proposal aimed at extending the provisions of Article Two of Law No. 237/2021 (suspension of legal, judicial, and contractual deadlines).

- Approval of the proposal related to alternative dispute resolution.
