The special advisor to the UN Secretary-General on Libya, Stephanie Williams, called for calm and the protection of civilians following reports of armed clashes in the capital, Tripoli. In light of the recent developments, the office of the Libyan Prime Minister appointed by the House of Representatives, Fathi Bashagha, announced that he left Tripoli shortly after arriving to assume his position. His arrival triggered clashes between armed groups supporting the Government of National Unity led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh and those backing the new Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha.
Williams expressed on Twitter: "In light of the ongoing developments in Tripoli, I want to emphasize the urgent need to maintain calm on the ground and protect civilians." She added, "I urge restraint and caution, as it is imperative to refrain from provocative actions, including inciting rhetoric, engaging in clashes, and mobilizing forces." She stressed that "the conflict cannot be resolved by violence, but through dialogue and negotiation, and for this, the UN's goodwill efforts remain available to all parties who believe in helping Libya find a genuine and consensual path forward towards stability and elections."
