It can be difficult to detect lung cancer symptoms in its early stages; however, there are sudden signs and symptoms of the disease that you should be aware of. Lung cancer is one of the most common and dangerous types of cancer, with a persistent cough being one of the primary symptoms. Nevertheless, experts have revealed five other signs to watch for, which many patients may experience but think are not caused by lung cancer, according to the British newspaper Express:
**Back Pain**
Back pain is often caused by a specific type of lung cancer known as Pancoast tumor. However, many individuals diagnosed with this condition experience back pain, and you may feel pain in the upper part of your back if it is due to lung cancer, rather than in your lower back.
**Constipation**
Lung cancer can lead to constipation, which means you may have fewer bowel movements than normal for you. This can often result in stomach pain or nausea, causing many patients to avoid eating or drinking to alleviate the symptoms.
**Balance Issues**
Small cell lung cancers may cause your immune system to attack your nervous system, which can in turn affect how your muscles work. You might find it difficult to stand when sitting, or feel unstable.
**Facial Swelling**
Many people believe that facial swelling is a sign of an allergic reaction. However, facial swelling can occur due to superior vena cava obstruction, which typically happens because of lung cancer. The superior vena cava is a large vein in the chest that carries blood from the upper half of the body to the heart, and an obstruction occurs when something interrupts blood flow. This usually happens due to lung cancer near the vein.
**Weight Loss**
Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of lung cancer. The UK Cancer Research Foundation states, "About 60 out of every 100 people with lung cancer (60%) experience loss of appetite and significant weight loss."
