Snapchat Announces New Updates for Scan Tool

Snapchat has announced a new update for its Scan tools, providing more ways to use the Snapchat camera to discover additional insights and facilitate more direct actions based on what is seen. The platform introduced the Scan option for the first time two years ago, offering its users another way to gather information via the app. Although it has not become a staple feature, the company has continued to add more functionalities to the tool over time.

As people are now accustomed to scanning QR codes as part of efforts to track COVID-19, this action has become more familiar. Consequently, the platform is offering more opportunities for the Scan tools. The platform is first working on making the Scan feature more central by placing it directly on the main camera screen of the app. There is now a Scan option in the center of the bottom functions bar in the app.

The platform stated: "This update brings the Scan button front and center through the main camera." This makes it easier to find fun and useful experiences across categories including fashion, food, plants, and more. This aims to encourage more users to try out Scan and discover what the tool offers, potentially helping to increase adoption and usage.

Furthermore, the platform is also rolling out a new shopping experience directly through Scan, which provides matching for a specific product based on a scanned image. Like most social platforms, Snapchat is gradually moving toward e-commerce, facilitating more direct purchasing options within the app.

The company has focused on augmented reality in this regard, utilizing advanced experience tools and digital scaling options, while also looking to integrate more digital clothing options, such as products for Bitmoji characters. This indicates a growing interest in virtual items and the concept of the metaverse, where your digital avatar increasingly represents yourself.

Additionally, platform users can also use Scan to shop through previously captured images, not just new pictures taken in the app. The company stated: "People love to take screenshots of things they see online and come back to them later, and with Scan, we make this easier than ever. Just click on your screenshots and use Scan technology to find and purchase those items with shopping potential through Memories."

The new shopping items in Scan are being launched in phases across both iOS and Android, with plans for shopping through Memories in the coming months. The platform is also introducing a new camera shortcuts feature for all users. It stated: "Camera shortcuts suggest camera modes, lenses, and relevant soundtracks based on what can be seen through the Snapchat camera.” Camera shortcuts are being rolled out today for all iOS users worldwide.

The evolution of Scan is in line with the shift towards augmented reality and overlaying digital content onto the real-world view. The platform notes that elements of Scan may be integrated into a fully augmented reality glasses experience. It stated: "Through the continuous development of Scan, we are building the next generation of personal computing around consumer perspective, with information and entertainment accessible instantly as people connect with friends and explore the world."
