Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, striker for Manchester United, has entered the 100 million club on Twitter, solidifying his position as the most followed person on social media platforms in the world. At 37 years old, Ronaldo is one of only five people globally to reach this follower count, being the first among football stars and athletes in general.
Joining Ronaldo in the 100 million club are former U.S. President Barack Obama with 131.9 million, Canadian singer Justin Bieber with 114.3 million, American singer Katy Perry with 108.8 million, and her fellow singer Rihanna with 106.4 million. Among football players, Brazilian Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain follows Ronaldo by a considerable margin with 56.7 million followers.
Ronaldo was the first person in the world to reach a total of 500 million followers across social media platforms in February 2020, and he currently approaches 700 million followers across various platforms. He was the first person to reach 400 million followers on Instagram in February of this year, and the number of his followers on the platform now exceeds 439 million, placing him second among the most followed accounts on Instagram, behind Instagram's own account with 504 million followers.
Ronaldo has over 151 million followers on Facebook and two million subscribers to his YouTube channel, which has been inactive for five years. In addition to his large following, many fans on Twitter and Instagram also keep track of hashtags to stay updated on "The Madeira Rocket" and watch the video clips in which he frequently appears.
Earlier this year, the British newspaper Daily Mail reported that Cristiano Ronaldo's earnings per post on Instagram amount to £1.7 million.
