The Security Directorate of Gharbia Governorate in Egypt announced that, in coordination with the General Security Sector, two individuals accused in the case of Basant Khaled, a victim of fake photos and cyberbullying on social media, were arrested. The incident, which took place in Kafr Ya'qub village within the Kafr El-Zayat district of Gharbia, shocked public opinion.
The efforts of the investigation team led to the identification of the suspects' hiding places, and following an operation by the General Security Sector, with participation from criminal investigation officers in Gharbia, the suspects were apprehended. In Kafr Ya'qub, a 17-year-old girl tragically died after ingesting a chemical tablet used to preserve grains, known as "the poison tablet." Her father confirmed that she had been suffering from severe psychological distress due to being blackmailed and bullied by certain individuals who had defamed her through fabricated photos shared among the village community.
Authorities in Gharbia received a notification from the emergency police about the arrival of Basant Khaled, a 17-year-old student of the second year of secondary education at Al-Azhar, who came to Tanta University Hospital in a state of distress, allegedly after consuming a toxic substance. She succumbed to her condition immediately upon arrival.
According to the health inspector's report, the cause of death was acute circulatory and respiratory failure due to the ingestion of the grain tablet, and there was no suspicion of any criminal activity. A report of the incident was filed and sent to the public prosecution for investigation.
Shahinez, the sister of the victim, revealed details regarding Basant's suicide, stating that their father had seen a video of her circulated among village youth without her face, where her face was superimposed onto another person's image. Basant had told her father that the photos were fabricated. After her father went to Friday prayers, he returned to find she had taken the poison tablet and passed away.
Shahinez also mentioned that her sister had gone to pray in her room before taking the tablet and that during a private lesson, the teacher had told her in front of her classmates that she was trending more than the person involved in a previous incident. Basant expressed distress as she had been receiving unwanted attention from two young men, to which they responded derogatorily.
