Morocco Imposes Night Curfew to Curb COVID-19 Spread

The Moroccan government announced on Monday evening a series of new measures to limit the spread of COVID-19, the most notable of which is a night curfew starting from 9 PM to 5 AM, effective Tuesday. The government also prohibited travel to and from the cities of Casablanca, Marrakech, and Agadir, as these areas record the highest infection rates.

The statement exempted "vaccinated individuals with a vaccine passport, individuals with urgent medical conditions, those tasked with transporting goods, and employees holding signed and stamped mission orders from their supervisors."

Additionally, the government stated that restaurants and cafes must close by 9 PM, and that baths, gyms, and indoor pools must close as well. Gatherings and activities in both indoor and outdoor spaces must not exceed 25 people, with "the requirement to obtain a permit from local authorities if this number is exceeded."

The statement also noted that "hotels and other tourism establishments must not exceed 75% of their capacity." It encouraged "remote work in both the public and private sectors where applicable."

The government explained that these measures came "to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, to protect the health of citizens, and in light of the very high increase in the number of cases and recorded deaths in recent times."

On Monday, Morocco registered 4,206 new COVID-19 cases, down from 6,189 cases on Sunday, bringing the total number of infections in the kingdom to 633,923. Additionally, 52 new deaths were recorded, compared to 48 the previous day, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 9,885.
