Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov stated that the idea of a nuclear war with Moscow is in the minds of unhealthy politicians.
The Russian ambassador told Russia 24 television today, Wednesday, that sane American generals do not think about nuclear war with Moscow, considering that such thoughts are held by unhealthy politicians. The Russian diplomat emphasized that maintaining the START treaty on strategic offensive arms reduction keeps the world away from the abyss that some U.S. politicians are pushing toward.
The comments from the Russian ambassador came in response to U.S. Strategic Command Chief General Charles Richard, who stated that he does not rule out the possibility of nuclear war with Russia or China. General Richard noted that the Pentagon has not considered the possibility of direct military confrontation with a nuclear power since the collapse of the Soviet Union, indicating that the situation has changed now. He added that there is a real possibility that a regional crisis with Russia or China could escalate rapidly into a conflict involving nuclear weapons.
In this context, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced today, Wednesday, that the agreement to extend the START-3 treaty on strategic offensive arms reduction between the United States and Russia will come into effect starting February 3, following the exchange of notes between the two parties. In turn, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the United States intends to discuss the issue of arms control with Russia regarding all of its nuclear weapons over the next five years, which is the duration of the extended START-3 treaty.
