The reasons for divorce between couples are numerous, and in the end, it is the children who suffer. However, in the strangest divorce case recently witnessed in Syria, a wife decided to divorce herself just 125 days after marriage. The city of Latakia recorded this unusual case of divorce, as revealed by the chief religious judge in Latakia, Ahmad Qiratah, who stated that a case of divorce was registered that was extraordinary for the governorate, due to the wife including a condition in her marriage contract that allowed her to divorce herself.
Qiratah explained in statements reported by the Syrian newspaper Al-Watan, "There are specific conditions that can be included in the marriage contract, where both parties can stipulate whatever they want, but usually, no specific conditions are mentioned. There was only one instance where the fiancée included a specific condition in the marriage contract allowing her to divorce herself at her discretion."
He confirmed that the wife indeed divorced herself after 125 days from the registration of the marriage contract, noting that the dowry in the contract terminated by the wife was 10 million lira immediate, to be paid, and another 10 million lira deferred, also unpaid.
Qiratah indicated that divorce rates have increased in Syria in recent years, attributing it to factors such as "the absence or loss of the husband, moral decline in society, social decay, and high living costs," all of which have contributed to the rising cases of divorce occurring in Syria today.
The religious judge linked the rise in crime rates with increased instances of divorce in Syria, adding, "Most criminals are either divorced or children of divorced parents in many cases. The proliferation of the internet and jealousy among women in emulating one another, particularly when their financial conditions differ, as well as jealousy and demands for equality, where the poorer emulate the richer, can lead to frustration for the husband and eventually result in divorce."
Regarding the report of the highest dowry recorded in Latakia and the public's interest in this news in recent days, Qiratah clarified that the young man who registered an unpaid dowry of 100 billion lira and an immediate unpaid dowry of 100 billion lira was an ordinary person, not a well-known or wealthy individual.
