Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign affairs chief, confirmed that the bloc plans to reach a tripartite agreement for liquefied natural gas with Israel and Egypt soon as part of efforts to end reliance on Russia. Borrell wrote in his blog: "Regarding the diversification of supplies, the European Commission and the United States have already agreed on additional supplies of liquefied natural gas. We are also working with Canada on potential supplies of LNG and hydrogen. The EU plans to conclude a tripartite agreement with Israel and Egypt for the supply of LNG before summer."
Earlier reports indicated that the EU is seeking to intensify cooperation with West African countries to replace gas imports from Russia, in addition to efforts to sign a memorandum of understanding with Egypt and Israel. It is noted that the European Union has imposed a series of sanctions on Russia due to its military operation in Ukraine, and EU countries are considering a sixth sanctions package that includes an oil embargo on Russia, although this decision does not have the support of all member states. Moscow has previously warned that rejecting Russian oil and gas would have severe consequences for the economies of Europe and the world.
