Title: Clarification on Civil Aviation Information

In response to what is being circulated by media outlets and some social media platforms, both locally and internationally, regarding the announcement by the site (IntelSky) specialized in tracking air traffic, stating that on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, the Greek Air Force intercepted an Airbus A321 aircraft with 145 passengers on board traveling from Madrid to Beirut, we at the Ministry of Public Works emphasize that for the sake of public safety and to maintain the reputation of Lebanese civil aviation, after contacting the Operations Manager of Middle East Airlines, Captain Ahmad Mansour, we were informed that the mentioned aircraft was operated by a crew consisting of two pilots and a co-pilot, all of whom had the required technical qualifications to perform their usual tasks. All three were present in the cockpit during the flight.

According to established protocols, it appears from the incident that the Lebanese aircraft communicated with the relevant air navigation authorities in Greece twice upon entering Greek airspace and was provided with standard communication frequencies. Shortly after entering Greek airspace, a Greek Air Force aircraft approached and contacted the Lebanese aircraft to inquire about any emergencies. Since the response was negative, the Greek fighter pilot saluted the Lebanese aircraft, and the latter continued on its intended flight path.

In addition, after reviewing with the General Directorate of Civil Aviation at Rafic Hariri International Airport, we were informed that they had not received any notification from the relevant Greek civil aviation authorities to date.

Therefore, in order to ensure transparency and credibility in the news related to this vital sector under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the ministry stresses the need to communicate with the General Directorate of Civil Aviation at Rafic Hariri International Airport as the authorized body in this matter, especially during a time when accuracy is crucial in handling news that preserves Lebanon's reputation internationally.
