Authorities in Wuhan announced on Tuesday that they will subject all residents to testing after the first local COVID-19 cases appeared in the city in over a year. Senior official Li Tao stated during a press conference that the city, with a population of 11 million, is "about to launch comprehensive nuclear acid tests for all residents rapidly."
On Monday, officials in Wuhan reported seven locally transmitted cases among migrant workers in the city, marking the first infections after a year with no cases and the cessation of the outbreak that had been accompanied by an unprecedented lockdown in early 2020.
China imposed lockdowns affecting millions of residents and restricted internal travel, conducting extensive testing in recent days in an effort to control the largest outbreak of the virus in months. On Tuesday, authorities reported 61 local infections as the Delta variant spread to dozens of cities after an outbreak among cleaning staff at Nanjing Airport led to nationwide infections.
Local governments in major cities, including Beijing, have subjected millions of residents to COVID-19 tests thus far, while residential complexes have been closed, and quarantines have been imposed on contacts of infected individuals.
