Iraqi media and activists on social media have published a video documenting the moment of the assassination of Kufa's Mayor, engineer Abir Salim, by an assailant while he was performing his duty to remove encroachments on public streets in the Iraqi province. The murder of the local official in Karbala by gunfire sparked widespread condemnation on social media against impunity, especially regarding the murderers of activists. Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi visited the crime scene about 100 km south of Baghdad.
In a statement, Al-Kadhimi said, "The killers and criminals will not escape punishment, and we seek retribution and justice for anyone who may think they can cheapen Iraqi blood. There is no one above the law." During Al-Kadhimi's visit, security forces brought the suspect in the murder, who had been arrested earlier, to the scene of the incident, according to the Prime Minister's office, which published photos of Al-Kadhimi speaking to the suspect while his eyes were covered.
