Qatari athlete Mutaz Barshim and Italian Gianmarco Tamberi shared the gold medal in the high jump at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday. After a brief discussion with the judge, Barshim and Tamberi agreed not to participate in a tiebreaker and instead shared the gold medal. Both Barshim and Tamberi successfully cleared a height of 2.37 meters on their first attempt but failed to clear 2.39 meters in three attempts. Maxim Nedasekau from Belarus won the bronze medal. This is Qatar's second gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics after Qatari weightlifter Fares Ibrahim Hassan, of Egyptian descent, claimed the gold yesterday in the men's 96-kilogram weightlifting competition. Fares set an Olympic record with a total lift of 402 kilograms, giving Qatar its first Olympic gold medal in history, which Barshim added to today.
