King Abdullah II called today, Thursday, for the responsible officials to follow the appropriate legal mechanism to ensure that "everyone among our people who was misled and erred or was drawn into this sedition," which was quashed in its early stages, is reunited with their families as soon as possible. This came in response to appeals from several figures from various governorates seeking the pardon of their children who succumbed to this sedition, after they submitted a petition to the Jordanian king signed by tribal leaders, recalling the Hashemite values of tolerance and forgiveness during a meeting held at Al-Husseiniah Palace, attended by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II.
In his response, the King said, "As a father and brother to all Jordanians and during this blessed month, the month of forgiveness and compassion, in which we all want to be surrounded by our families, I ask the concerned brothers to consider an appropriate mechanism to ensure that everyone among our people who was misled, erred, or was drawn into this sedition is with their families as soon as possible."
King Abdullah began discussing the sedition case by stating, "What happened was painful, not because there was a direct threat to the country, as we managed to halt the sedition, but if it hadn't been stopped from the start, it could have led the country in difficult directions, God forbid. From the beginning, I decided to handle the matter calmly, and you are aware of what happened and how things went beyond this context."
The Jordanian King added that what happened as a result of miscalculation and being drawn into a painful sedition, without thinking of the consequences, does not shake us; "Our country is strong with your presence, and my confidence in our institutions knows no bounds." He continued, "My duty, my goal, and the trust I bear is to serve and protect our people and our country, and this is the foundation that has determined and will continue to determine our dealings with everything."
In discussing the development of institutional performance, he confirmed that "we have much work ahead of us. Our people are facing difficult circumstances, and the priority is to improve our institutions' performance, to serve our dear people and fulfill their aspirations," emphasizing the need to focus on how to emerge from the challenges posed by COVID-19, aiming for a safe summer that enables Jordan to reopen sectors, easing the burden on citizens. King Abdullah also referred to ongoing efforts to provide vaccinations and the possibility of prioritizing categories such as teachers, "so that our children can return to their schools and universities."
The meeting was attended by former Prime Minister Taher Al-Masri, former Prime Minister Abdul-Raouf Rawabdeh, former Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Halaika, former Minister Ibrahim Al-Amoush, former Minister Mazen Al-Qadi, former Minister Barakat Awjan, former Minister Youssef Al-Jazi, Sheikh Hani Al-Hadid, and former MP Wafa Bani Mustafa. The Ammon News Agency reported that two individuals might be excluded from the release of those detained in the sedition case.
