In Egypt: Policeman Kills Two Brothers Over Traffic Violation

A fight occurred between a police assistant and two brothers working at a car tire repair shop in Egypt, resulting in their deaths from gunfire fired by the police assistant, who fled the scene. The Egyptian public prosecutor ordered the police assistant to be detained for four days pending investigation, accusing him of deliberately killing the two brothers in Shebin El-Qanater in Qalyubia, north of Cairo.

On Friday, the Egyptian public prosecutor received a report from the police about a brawl between the police assistant and the two brothers that resulted in fatalities. Subsequently, local residents pursued the police assistant, leading to his injury, and he was taken to the hospital. This incident coincided with the circulation of news on social media, which was monitored by the monitoring and analysis unit of the public prosecutor's office.

The public prosecutor ordered that the police assistant be kept under guard until he regained consciousness and could be questioned, and directed a swift investigation into the incident. After the suspect regained consciousness today, he was interrogated about the charges against him, and the prosecutor ordered his detention pending investigation.

This decision followed the prosecutor's visit to the crime scene and their examination of it, along with securing surveillance cameras overlooking the scene for review. The bodies of the deceased were inspected, revealing injuries consistent with gunfire. Investigations with the families of the deceased led to a preliminary understanding that a dispute developed between the victims and the police assistant after the latter issued a traffic violation to the driver of a vehicle that had stopped at the shop where the deceased worked.

When one of the brothers reproached the police assistant, a scuffle broke out among the three, resulting in the police assistant firing a shot at one of the victims, who fell wounded and died while being assisted. The other brother attempted to chase the police assistant but succumbed to gunshot injuries. Investigations are ongoing to clarify the circumstances of his death.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted that a bullet accidentally discharged from his weapon, hitting one of the victims while he was attempting to disperse a crowd that gathered due to the fight arising from the traffic violation. Another bullet accidentally discharged, striking the second victim who attempted to seek refuge from the gathering in a nearby worker's room.

After police forces arrived, a mob of residents attacked the suspect, beating him and throwing stones, with one of the brothers' relatives injuring him with a knife. The public prosecutor ordered an autopsy on the bodies of the victims to determine the cause of death, and a medical examination of the suspect to ascertain the cause and nature of his injuries. The prosecutor also seized the suspect's weapon for examination by forensic authorities.

The Egyptian prosecutor stated that due to the actions of some residents at the scene, including gathering, vandalism, and assault on the assailant, it urges them to adhere to the official channels in seeking justice and to resort to the competent authorities responsible for upholding the rule of law. The public prosecutor affirmed its commitment, along with all law enforcement agencies, to restore rights and seek retribution against aggressors while protecting victims' interests. They also emphasized their obligation to uphold the rule of law and confront any violations that hinder its enforcement.
